Newborns
(2025, Ateliers Jeanne Barret, Marseille)
200x 240 cm
PVC frame, painted latex, mousse mannequin, aspiration/expiration system
Newborns is a vacuum bed* made from hand-painted latex. Inside, two life-sized foam mannequins embrace in a spooning position. A built-in inhale/exhale system emits a slow, steady breath over the course of approximately 50 minutes. This piece explores the tension between two concepts: the feeling of belonging to a community, and a primal memory. Animated by continuous breathing, the latex becomes a living membrane — a shared skin between the artwork and the viewer.
The work emerged from conversations with two professionals in extreme bondage. Sharing a fascination with latex, one of them told me that, through this material, they felt “as if they were back in their mother’s womb.” This statement echoed another powerful aspect of my immersion in the kink scene: the sense of community — particularly through the stories of people who had long experienced solitude in their desires, until the moment they discovered a community that shared them. A kind of “new birth.”
*Vacuum bed: a bondage device in which one or more people are vacuum-sealed inside a latex envelope, supported by a perforated PVC frame for suction.
